The archaeological excavations of Herculaneum are also remains of the ancient city of Herculaneum, buried under a thick blanket of mud, which has allowed the best conservation during the explosion of Vesuvius in 79 BC. In 1709, by chance, during excavations for a well, the ancient theater was brought to light and it was King Charles of Bourbon who started the excavations. Herculaneum was the holiday resort of the rich Romans, as evidenced by the villas looking towards the sea. Appreciated for its beautiful frescoes and mosaics, the city is visited every year by thousands of tourists.
